Empowering Rural Girls Through Hockey – Breaking Barriers Through Sports

The Story

When Neeru Yadav became the Sarpanch of Gram Panchayat Lambi Ahir in 2020, she recognized that many talented rural girls had dreams but lacked opportunities. Deep-rooted social norms, financial limitations, and limited sports infrastructure prevented them from participating in competitive sports.

Determined to change this reality, she established an all-girls hockey team and personally visited families to encourage parents to support their daughters. Through Aditri Foundation, she arranged professional coaching, hockey sticks, uniforms, protective equipment, and regular practice sessions, ensuring that financial barriers would never stop a girl from pursuing her dream.

The initiative soon produced remarkable results. Girls who had never stepped onto a playground began competing at district, state, and national levels. One player reached the national level, another represented at the inter-college level, and another was selected at the state level. Their success inspired hundreds of girls across nearby villages to believe that they, too, could achieve greatness through sports.

Today, this initiative is recognized as a powerful example of how sports can transform lives, promote gender equality, and create future women leaders.
